How to Choose Art for Your Home (Expert Tips)
The art that you choose to place in your home not only helps people to understand your style choices, but also creates the color story in a space. You can use your art to either help blend multiple spaces in your home, like your family room, dining room and living room, or you can use it to help separate the spaces in your home from one another, like making sure your master suite stands out from the rest of the home. It is important to not over do your art, and you want to make sure that you are showcasing it on the best wall for your space.
Choosing the right art to help accent the style of your home is a daunting task for many people. There are so many different styles and designs, sizes and shapes of art. You have to make the decision if you want the art to be the focal point of the room, or if you want it to blend in and create a background for a space. When we choose art for a space, one of the most influential parts of a room is the wall size. Many times, we walk into a room that has big empty wall spaces, so we know that we need to create some interest by placing a large piece of art. We choose our style of art based off the home it is going into. We are not going to put a piece of bold, black and gold art into a traditional home, when that would be better suited for a modern design. Instead we would choose something more subtle, with lighter, more transitional colors like light blue, greens, or neutrals. Another great choice for any home is a large mirror, a small collage of mirrors, or wall décor like metal wall art.
While the style of the piece is important, creating a color story within your home is key to making all the décor make sense. If you are going to choose a piece of blue art, it is going to set the stage for the rest of the space. You will want to use blue décor and incorporate blue pillows into the space. Always remember however, that just because you chose dark blue for the wall art, you can still mix and match your color hues throughout.
Another fun way to play with your art is by choosing different fun pieces to separate your spaces. For example, in a house we staged recently, we chose to use blue art and multiple shades of blue throughout the main living spaces, but when we got into the bedroom, we decided to go with a fun and fresh look and incorporated pink into the space. It gave the room a different feel than the rest of the house and showed it off as a master retreat, but because the pink art had splashes of blue in it, it was well incorporated into the home. It is all a personal preference, but sometimes using your art to define your spaces can be a fun twist.
The key to art is to choose what speaks to you, and go for it! When staging a home, the first thing I always do is pick a piece of art to inspire me and the spaces I am designing. Then, things just flow naturally! When the art excites you so will the rest of the space, and next thing you know, you have created the perfect space for you that you love!
