Do you constantly feel like you’re running out of storage in your home? If so, you’re not alone. A lack of sufficient storage space is one of the most common complaints among modern homeowners. Turns out, we Americans have a lot more stuff than our homes have room for (no wonder this minimalism trend has become so popular, right?).

That said, if you’re preparing to sell your home, a lack of storage is a pressing problem to tackle. As you can imagine, ample storage space is a huge selling point for potential buyers, so even if storage is tight in your home, it’s crucial to create the illusion of space to impress buyers. One of the quickest ways to accomplish this is by staging your closets — your home’s primary spot for storage!

Expert Home Staging Tips for Staging a Closet

As professional home stagers in Florida and Texas, here are our home staging tips and secrets to create bedroom closets, linen closets, and storage spaces that impress home buyers time and time again!

1. Pack and Declutter

Simply put, a messy, disorganized closet is an instant turn-off for home buyers. That means the first (and most important) of all the staging tips for closets is to remove as much clutter as possible.

Staging your closet is an excellent opportunity to review what you have and determine what you still need (it’s kind of like forced spring cleaning!). Determine what is worth keeping, what is in good enough condition to donate or sell, and what needs to be thrown out. Then, take it a step further and look through the “keep” pile to determine what you can keep in storage (like clothes that are out of season) until you move.

2. Clean the Floors

Clearing the floor in your closet is about more than just cleanliness. A clear closet floor with no boxes, storage containers, or unnecessary clutter can make your closet appear larger!

If you have a lot of loose shoes on the floor, consider getting a nice shoe organizer that you can put on a shelf or hang on the back of your closet door. Bins should be placed on shelves in your closet, so if you’re low on shelf space, consider investing in an inexpensive shelving system. Anything that doesn’t fit on a shelf should be placed in a storage unit.

3. Consider White Paint

A stylish white open closet with a gold hanging rod, featuring a collection of soft-colored sweaters and blouses on white hangers. Shelves on the left display pink handbags, decorative boxes, and a small gold basket.

If your closet is painted any color than white, now is the time to change up the paint. White and off-white walls reflect light and create the illusion of a more spacious closet. Steer clear of dark colors — they will make your closet appear smaller.

4. Replace Bins

Clear bins are handy for day-to-day life because they allow you to see everything inside. However, they are a poor choice for staging because they can create a chaotic, disorganized look.

Trade our clear bins or boxes for opaque boxes or baskets in a neutral color. Inexpensive boxes are a small investment that will pay dividends by giving your closet a cohesive, organized look while making it easy to hide away items you still need handy.

5. Match Hangers

Mismatched hangers create a chaotic, cluttered appearance, making your closet space feel smaller and less desirable.

After packing away most of your clothes and keeping a few key pieces to display (more on that below!), swap out all the mismatched hangers for matching hangers for a cohesive, uniform look. Better yet, swap out plastic hangers for wood hangers for a more upscale look.

6. Display Clothes by Season

For practical reasons, you probably have all your clothing in your closet at all times when you’re living in your home. But to maximize space in your closet when staging it, only focus on hanging clothes for the current season — you can pack the rest in boxes (you won’t need them until after you move, anyway!).

For example, if you’re showing your house in the summer, hang up a few short-sleeved shirts, tank tops, and dresses, and if it’s the winter, then long sleeves, coats, and sweaters are perfect to put on display.

7. Organize Clothes

A bright and airy white closet with neatly arranged clothing in neutral tones. Light pink and beige dresses hang on one side, while gray and white shirts are organized on the other. Open shelving and storage boxes provide additional organization.

You might not realize it, but mismatched clothing can create a busy, disorganized look that detracts from the size of your closet.

Once you’ve narrowed down your wardrobe to just a few seasonal pieces to display, consider organizing them by color and style. In each color-coordinated section, make sure the clothes face the same direction, moving from short sleeves to long sleeves, to create a perfectly organized closet that Marie Kondo would be proud of!

8. Install Additional Lighting

Even if your closet already has overhead lighting, it’s wise to add extra lighting to its hidden, dark corners. After all, light can create the illusion of more space, and if you’re trying to show off your closet’s available storage space… it’s crucial to maximize every square inch possible!

Closet lighting (particularly for staging and showing your home) doesn’t have to be expensive or permanent. Consider investing in inexpensive push lights that can be attached to the wall and removed before moving. Trust us… these small lights can make a big difference!

9. Hang a Mirror

A luxurious walk-in closet with warm wood tones, built-in LED lighting, and a well-organized clothing display. A sleek white table with a glossy black top holds handbags and accessories, while a mirrored wall reflects a dressing area.

In larger walk-in closets, like the master bedroom closet, consider hanging a mirror somewhere in the closet (or on the back of the door if you’re tight on space). Not only will a mirror help you put together a sharp-looking outfit, but mirrors also reflect light to create the illusion of more visual space.
