There’s no place like home, especially for the seasonal celebrations. One of the best parts of the holidays is decorating your home for the festivities, to help you get into the holiday spirit. But decorating isn’t always easy, and it can be hard to pull off the look you’re envisioning. So how can you make it happen? We have a few tips from our head of design to help you achieve that perfect look. We touched on this topic two months ago in our November magazine, but we really want to emphasize Sue’s expert advice, specifically focusing on the winter holidays, to make the occasion a little less stressful for you and your family.

For starters, pick a theme and stick with it. This includes colors, textures, and styles. Some examples of this are; Silver and Gold, Farmhouse style, classic Christmas, Christmas Cabin, Christmas at the Beach, White Christmas, and so many more. Once you choose your theme and figure out your color story, you can get started. Having a consistent theme throughout your home gives it a cohesive feel, which gives a merry, calming feel instead overwhelming you and your guests.

Another way to avoid inundating you and your guests is to add to your existing furniture and décor without cluttering. Some people prefer to put away their usual décor and replace it with holiday ornamentation which helps avoid the disorder but isn’t necessary. You don’t want to over-do it. If you follow our first tip, this will easily fall into place as long as you keep in mind that sometimes less is more, you don’t always have to go bold to make a statement. I personally know that I get overly excited for the holidays so this can be hard for me, but I get a bit anxious when I feel like there is too much going on or that my house looks messy.

Last but not least, it’s always safe to stick with the basics. This includes candles, garland and other holiday greenery, and simple stockings and ornaments. Then from there if you want, spice it up a little/incorporate your desired theme. At the end of the day, this decorating extravaganza should be for you. It should be enjoyable and not a painful process. You can always ask for help if you’re stuck on what to do. This can be professional help, or friends and family. I know Sueann is always happy to help and has even helped me personally!

I hope you find this advice helpful. Now, go turn on some holiday tunes, make some hot cocoa, and get ready to dive into an exciting winter celebration! ‘Tis the season for fun home decorating and special, unforgettable moments with friends and family in your festive and welcoming home.
